1. Intro: general: What do they know? What do they think? What is --or are-- the United States? Where is it? Geography: Land structure, water, temperatures and weather patterns, settlement, displacement of natives, agriculture, industry, stuff like this. Early colonisation, early history (Aboriginal and European), Riverine society. 2. Governmental overview, the Constitution, Administrative divisions --Executive – Legislature - Judiciary; Electoral system, Congressional elections: senate and House of reps, gerrymandering, Financial contributions, Big Money PACs, SUPERPACs; State assemblies; laws. Political parties, subdivisions within parties: eg, The Tea Party. 3. Public participation in government; taxes; lobby groups and pressure groups, volunteering, 'giving back'. Education; immigration , Assimilation (the melting Pot); Religiosity; Exceptionalism; health care; Prisons, guns. 4. The US position in the world, multi-polarity; Pax Americana, History of, Isolationism and non-isolationism; Beacon to the World; Exceptionalism again. 5. Who rules? America's aristocrats; The 'American Dream' (or ideas of this). 6. The car, Detroit, The Rouge Plant, Motown, the rust belt. 7. Chicago and New York; the South-West and the West Coast; the North-west; the South, the mid-west, the North-East, the Plains and Texas. 8. Music: Gospel, Blues,Jazz, Blue Grass, Folk, Country, Swing, Big Band, Rock-a-billy,R&B, Motown ,Country,Pop, Rock and Roll, Swing, Rap - Hip Hop Muzak Metal; Acid Rock (elevator music), The West-Coast sound; California/surf sound; Nashville; Country-Rock, etc. 9. Cinema (The Movies): The Musical; Hollywood; the Hollywood movie, the Block-buster; Hollywood and history; Branding; Advertising 10. Cinema: Classic ‘American’ films. –And why are they ‘American’? Or what makes them so American? (Examples which come to mind: Wizard of Oz; Badlands; Casablanca; Red River; To Kill a Mockingbird; Citizen Cane; The Last Picture Show; maybe American Graffiti; Short Cuts.) 11. Television and the networks -- Big Media. –Advertising. 12. Sports: American Football - baseball – basketball: the big three. Also: Bowling, Golf and other somewhat fringe sports such as (ice) hockey, lacrosse, soccer (though this is, paradoxically, one of the more popular sports for kids to play). Etc. 13. Students are to prepare, alone or in pairs (in exceptional cases a group of three will be permitted), shortish presntations (25 - 45 minutes), accompanied by appropriate A-V material, on some topic relating to some aspect or aspects of American life and cultrure. Attendance is compulsory (which is to say two (2) absences only are permitted). Topic list: Geographical diversity in America. The American political system. Health Care in America. The American Aristocracy. Beacon to the World / American Exceptionalism. Pax Americana. The Car / Detroit / The Rouge Plant / UAW and the Civil Rights Movement / 'The Industrial Heartand / The Rust Belt / Ford. Chicago and New York. Great American Cities. The South. The Music. Cinema. Radio and Television: The Networks / Fox / CNN. Advertising. Sports in America. The Cowboy / The West / The Frontier / The Outlaw. Gangsters. Fine Art / LIterature / Theatre. Other--Students may create their own topic, though this must first be cleared with the instructor. |

Preparation and presentation of an adequate in-class A-V-accompanied project, on a topic of the student's choice, though cleared first with the instructor, as well as participation in presentations given by others. Successful completion of a take-home exam relating to material presented during lectures, and a short oral exam relating to presentations and to some topic relating to American life and culture (which oral topics will be given out beforehand). A grade of 5 will be granted to students who have a very good knowledge of American life and culture, are abe to engage in and understand perfectly, or almost perfectly, discussions pertaining to American life and culture, and who fully understand the importance of participation in aspects of the American Cultural heritage. A grade of 4 will be granted to students who have a good knowledge of American life and culture, are able to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to American life and culture, and who understand well the importance of partcipation in aspects of the American Cultural heritage. A grade of 3 will be granted to students who have an adequate knowledge of American life and culture, are able adequately to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to American life and culture, and who understand more or less adequately the importance of participation in apects of the American Cultural heritage. A grade of 2 will be given to sudents who have an inadequate knowledge of American life and culture, are unable adequately to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to American life and culture, and who do not have an adequate understanding of the importance of participation in aspects of the American Cultural heritage. |

Zaliczenie and exam. Student presentations will count for 50% of the final grade, the take-home exam will count for 35% of the final grade, and the oral exam will count for 15% of the final grade. Students' language level should now be at, or appproaching, B2. |
