Students are to prepare, alone or in pairs (in excepional cases a group of three will be permitted), shortish presentations (25 - 45 minutes), accompanied by appropriate A-V material, on some topic relating to some aspect or aspects of American history. Attendance is compulsory (which is to say two (2) absences only are permitted). Topic List: The European Invasion / Conquest of Native Peoples / Extinction of the Native Peoples John Smith and Pocahontas --the story and the myth. Jamestown Settlement Massachsetts Settlement: The Beacon on the Hill American Exceptionalism Bacon's Rebellion The French - Indian War: Prelude to Independence The American Revolution: What was revolutionary about it? The Constitutional Convention: The Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Ratification Aexander Hamilton and the Continental Vision Manifest Destiny The Louisiana Purchase Exceptional Early Americans: Franklin, Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, etc. North and South The Texas - Mexico War The Civil War and Aftermath Westward Expansion The Myth of the West The Lure of the Frontier as Founding Myth The Robber Barons and the Gilded Age World War I The Spanish-American War and the Beginnings of an American Empire The Great Migration WWII: The War against Japan Vietnam Vietnam and the 1960s ansd 70s Iraq 9/11 Other: Students may choose a topic not associated with any of the above, but this must first be cleared with the instructor.

Preparation and presentation of an adequate in-class A-V-accompanied project, on a topic of the student's choice, though cleared first with the instructor, as well as partcipation in presentations given by others. Successful completion of a take-home exam relatng to material presented during lectures, and a short oral exam relating to presentations as well as some topic relating to American history ( which topics will be given out beforhand). A grade of 5 will be granted to students who have a very good knowledge of Amercan history, are able to understand perfectly or almost perfectly discussions pertaining to American history and who fully understand the importance of participating in aspects of the American Historical heritage. A grade of 4 willl be granted to students who have a good knowledge of American history, are able to engage in and understand well discussions pertaining to American history, and who understand well the importance of participation in aspects of the American historical heritage. A grade of 3 will be granted to students who have an adequate knowledge of American history, are able adequately to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to American history, and who understand more or less adeqately the importance of participation in aspects of the American historical heritage. A grade of 2 will be gven to students who have an inadequate knowledge of American history, are unable adequately to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to American history, and who do not have an adequate understanding of the importance of participation in aspects of the American historical heritage. |

Zaliczenie and exam Student presentations will count for 40% of the final grade, the take-home exam will count for 40% of the final grade, and the oral exam will count for 20% of the final grade. Students' language level should now be at, or approachng, B2. |
