Students are each to write four to five ( 4 - 5) short-ish essays, each of these being one-to-three (1 - 3) pages in
length, on a topic provided by the instructor, or devised on their own with that instructor's acceptance, which
paper may become the focus of a class discussion. They are also to read, attend, and comment intelligently and
critically on assorted 'prompt' readings as well as on other students' essays, or passages from other students'
essays, presented anonymously, for class discussion. Attendance is obligatory (which is to say that a maximum of
two lessons may be missed). Suggested readings / discussion topics, or topic areas: - Luck and destiny. - Intimations of Mortality in a Covid world. - Freedom from / Freedom to in a free and civilised society. (or / and: in a Covid world). - Love / Traditional family structures / The role and education of men in contemporary society. - Human sensibility and creativity. - Dream and desire in the blind. - Nationalism and Immigration. - The role of a free press in a vibrant society - The rule of Law in a vibrant society. - "No Country for Old Men" (film version): How does the ending of the film (that is, Chigurh's walking away) reflect today's Zeitgeist? |
Kryteria oceny osiągniętych efektów uczenia się
|
Kryteria oceny efektów uczenia się osiągniętych przez studenta |
Completion of four or five decent, or at least adequate, short essays on topics of the students' choice (though directed and cleared by the instructor), as well as the reading of assorted 'prompt' handouts and of other students' essays, or excerpts of other students' essays, and participation in discussions of such readings and discussions of such essays, or excerpts of such essays. A grade of 5 will be awarded to particularly articulate, well-balanced, and well-reasoned essays, reflecting exceptional thought and development, that are written in a particularly coherent and grammatically correct form and appropriate register. A grade of 4 will be awarded to reasonably articulate, well-balanced, and well-reasoned essays, reflecting reasonable thought and development, that are written in a reasonably coherent and grammatically correct form and appropriate register. A grade of 3 will be awarded to adequately articulate and somewhat balanced and reasoned essays, which reveal an adequate degree of thought and development, and that are written in an adequately coherent and grammatically correct form and that are more or less appropriate in register. A grade of 2 will be given to inadequately articulate and rather inadequately balanced and reasoned essays, which do not reveal an adequate degree of thought and development, and that
are written in a not-particularly coherent or grammatically correct fashion or register. |

Warunki odbywania i zaliczenia zajęć oraz dopuszczenia do końcowego egzaminu (zaliczenia z oceną) |
Students' essays will constitute the bulk of each students' grades (up tp 80%). The additional 20% of the grade will be based on attendance and participation in class discussions that arise out of assorted 'prompt' readings, as well as out of readings of others' essays and essay fragments and excerpts. The essays written are to be articulate, well-organised, and well-written (coherent and grammatically sound), as well as interesting (informed and informative) insofar as possible, and will be graded accordingly. Class discussions which arise out of class readings (prompt readings) and the readings of excerpts and passages of others' essays are also to be wellorganised, articulate, and interesting, and will influence grades accordingly. (Students will now all be at a B2 level of language competence,) |
