Students are to prepare, alone or in pairs (in exceptional cases a group of three will be permitted), shortish presentations (25 - 45 minutes), accompanied by appropriate AV material, on some topic relating to some aspect or aspects of British life and culture. Attendance is compulsory (which is to say two (2) absences are permitted). Topic list: What is Britain and who are the British? The British Empire and Imperial trappings. Victorian trappings. Holidays and celebrations; food and drink; manners and etiquette; British dos and don’ts. British cities. Tales rhymes, legends and such like. The 60s revolution: The Beatles, the Stones, and the music scene; evolution of British music since the 60s. British fashion: Carnaby street. Media in Britain. British cinema. British comedy (what makes it British?). The British intellectual tradition. Fine art and Culture in Britain. Literature. Other—Students may create their own topic, though this mus be cleared with the instructor. |

Preparation and presentation of an adequate in-class A-V accompanied project, on a topic of
the student’s choice, though cleared first with the instructor, as well as participation in
presentations given by others. Successful completion of a take-home exam relating to material presented during lectures, and a short oral exam relating to presentations and to some topic relating to British life and culture (which oral topics will be given out before hand). A grade of 5 will be granted to students who have a very good knowledge of British life and culture, are able to to engage in and understand perfectly, or almost perfectly, discussions pertaining to British life and culture, and who fully understand the importance of participation in aspects of the British Cultural heritage. A grade of 4 will be granted to students who have a good knowledge of British life and culture, are able to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to British life and culture, and who understand well the importance of participation in aspects of the British Cultural heritage. A grade of 3 will be granted to students who have an adequate knowledge of British life and
culture, are able adequately to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to British life
and culture, and who understand more or less the importance of participation in aspects of
the British Cultural heritage. A grade of 2 will be given to students who have an inadequate knowledge of British life and
culture, are unable adequately to engage in and understand discussions pertaining to British
life and culture, and who do not have an adequate understanding of the importance of
participation in aspects of the British Cultural heritage. |

Student presentations will count for 50% of the final grade, the take-home exam will count for 35% of the final grade, and the oral exam will count for 15% of the final grade. Students’ language level should now be at, or
approaching, B2. |
